People typically have eight molars in the back of their mouth. These large teeth work together to chew and grind food. If one of these teeth is knocked out, extracted or lost to severe tooth decay, it can significantly impair your ability to process food before swallowing.
Sometimes a missing first molar can be replaced by a dental bridge. However, a missing rear molar can’t viably be restored in this manner as there will not be a corresponding rear tooth to secure the bridge in your mouth.
In order to effectively replace the missing rear molar and restore its natural strength, Dr. Stephen Babin might recommend performing a dental implant restoration at Stephen Babin DDS.
The process starts by inserting a titanium implant abutment into the bone structure under the empty void. This is typically done in a simple outpatient appointment where you will need to be sedated. Afterward, you might feel some lingering sedative effect so you’ll need to arrange for a ride home.
This abutment will create a very strong anchor point for an eventual dental crown. Because of the strong bond between the titanium abutment and the surrounding bone tissues, the final restoration will feel just as strong as the natural tooth.
Once everything has healed, Dr. Stephen Babin can start the standard process of fitting the abutment for a crown.
